My Project

My first-grade students are eager to explore the natural world. However, limited resources often restrict our ability to provide immersive, hands-on science experiences. A 10-gallon aquaponics system will transform our classroom into a living laboratory, directly allowing students to observe and participate in a self-sustaining ecosystem. This project will address the following needs:

*Hands-on Science Education: Provide concrete, experiential learning opportunities in science.

*Environmental Awareness: Cultivate an understanding of ecological relationships and sustainable practices.

*Curriculum Enrichment: Integrate science concepts with language arts, math, and social studies.

*Student Engagement: Increase student motivation and interest in learning.

*Responsibility and Care: Teach students the importance of caring for living organisms.

Students will actively participate in setting up the aquaponics system. We will observe the fish and plant growth. Students will test water quality. Students will plant and harvest crops. Our Science lessons will consist of documenting their observations through journaling and drawings. Additionally, students will learn about the nitrogen cycle and the symbiotic relationship between fish and plants.
