About My Students

Fish Club is an active team run by Rosendo, Miguel, Jose, and Hoshmand who maintain our 55-gallon aquarium that is the pride of our ENL classroom that serves 29+ students.

The team learns about ecosystems and has been taking care of our small community of fish for over a year. We have had other Fish Club members come and go, but these dedicated students look forward to our weekly meetings, always brimming with questions and ideas as they perform their "aquatic duties" as budding biologists.

This year the Fish Club team is challenging itself to re-create a vibrant, healthy fish community. Last year the tank experienced an eco-collapse that devastated 85% of its aquatic members. The team learned the importance of selecting fish citizens that are compatible with each other. They would like to build up the tank in the months before summer recess to find out if their studied suggestions of fish care will see the aquarium through when they begin 8th grade this September.

Cultivating the habits necessary to maintain a large aquarium takes discipline and teamwork. The Fish Club members have a high-interest in the up-keep of our classroom community tank because they can observe the interesting interactions of living organisms right before their eyes. Learning what maintenance tasks to perform on a recurring schedule helps them understand the importance of a balanced ecosystem, which they have taken on as aquarium water experts, nutritionists, and waste remediation specialists. Our weekly meetings are actively observing fish and their environment, checking ammonia and temperature, and changing water and filters so that all students can enjoy the harmony of our aquatic microcosm during the rest of the week.

In Their Own Words

Our team project is to get money to buy fishes and supplies. Our goal is to accomplish that we buy fishes and learn about fish by feeding them, change the filters, change the water. We have to find out if the water is toxic or it's good for new fish. We need this project idea because so if the fish get along with other fishes. (Jose)

As biologists we are choosing what type of aquatic life or animals will inhabit our aquarium and mostly of this is leadership because is proving that its knowing more information and taking care of the fish. (Rosendo)

We are following a webquest because we are as biologists, we are choosing what type of aquatic life or animals will inhabit our aquarium (Miguel)

This project is important to me and my school community because it is fun to learn about fishes and feed them. And it is also important because it helps you become a marine biologist. And soon we could save whales and coral reefs. This is also important because we learn about specific fish. (Hoshmand)
