Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The students at my school are diverse, but considered "at risk." They come here looking for community, a second chance and to excel as a student and rebuild their confidence. Once our students come to our school they are re-engaged through internships and project-based learning. Through this, they become independent, mature, responsible happier young adults ready to pursue careers and/or college.

Some of the students are; Gina, one of the leaders who has designed our fish tank system and is engaged in our school's wildlife. She is the leader of this project. Isabella is in charge of helping students collect data and problem-solve issues, Tatiana is helping to choose the appropriate fish and tell students about them. The students will engage other students in a peer-to- peer effort to educate the individual students and appropriate science classes.

Having a 30 Gallon fish aquarium in our school will allow students to design and construct a dynamic living environment for fish. Students will need to be responsible for maintaining the fish environment. When the nitrogen cycle, ph or dissolved oxygen levels are not ideal students will need to problem solve and find efficient and ecological ways to address problems. While working together to maintain the fish students will nurture and care for these living creatures. This will develop empathy and pride. Students will have multiple opportunities for research that connects to their academic learning in a real-world context. Our school community will benefit from this beautiful feature which offers a calming connection to nature that relieves stress and anxiety.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to create an aquarium that is shared and enjoyed by the entire school community. We have set up some small tanks and we have enjoyed the challenge of designing and maintaining them. Our large aquarium will enable more students to experience this stimulating, satisfying, fun challenge while also providing a beautiful feature for our school.

Being a leader in this project will help myself and other people to keep up with all of the responsibilities that come with owning a fish tank. I will make the most of being a leader by assigning students with different tasks that they will be able to participate in while we are creating and maintaining this tank.

This project is important to me and my school community because as students we are constantly problem-solving. building, and caring for live animals. This will be a fun and exciting challenge that students can work together to solve. This project is also important to me because it will be able to bring peace of mind to staff and students within my school community.
