My Project

Although I am a first year teacher, 186th Street Elementary has been my home for many years. My mom has been teaching here since 1988. This has always been a fantastic school full of students who are eager to learn.

Unfortunately, the majority of students live in a neighborhood that is dominated by gang activity.

By age 9, many students have already been subject to the negative influences of gangs and violence. This Title 1 school has 85% of students at a low-income level.

Every day my fourth graders come to school ready and eager to learn. With over 70% of my classroom featuring Latinx students, I want to provide them with a library full of high-interest Latinx stories.

I have chosen books based on the following factors: student interest, beloved authors, biographies of “change makers” featured during our Latinx Living Museum, and books at a variety of reading levels. As an ELD teacher, my students range from above grade level to new arrivals. I want students of all reading abilities to enjoy Latinx stories.

My Project

I have established a “free choice” reading program within my classroom. Each semester students are challenged to read 20 books of their choice. I strive to create an engaging and inclusive community that affirms all students as readers.

Every book in my classroom is cataloged in the “Booksource” library app. The app shows that only 4% of my books feature Latinx stories. With over 70% of my students coming from a variety of different Latinx backgrounds, the absence of Latinx books is profound. With your help, you can show all students that Latinx stories are important and necessary to every library.

My reading program is created by award-winning teacher Donalyn Miller, who authored both "The Book Whisperer" and "Reading in the Wild".
