This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a first-year Special Education teacher who will be teaching a First grade ICT class in the Bronx. I will be teaching children with multiple disabilities. My first grade students are diverse and come from many different backgrounds and cultures. My students belong to a lower income level community in the Bronx.

About 70 percent of the students in the school are available for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.

Many of my students receive special education services and some of my students are English language learners. They will need supports in every aspect of their lives, both in the classroom and beyond. My students will learn best in a classroom that offers them the supports they need to participate successfully in classroom activities.

My Project

As I open my classroom door this new school year, I will be welcoming young learners with a variety of experiences, strengths, and challenges. For some of my students, this will be their first time in school. For others, they will be returning back to in-person learning. I want to be able to provide a safe, nurturing, and supportive classroom environment to all my wonderful students.

My classroom needs flexible seating that will make the classroom more accessible for my students.

Many of my students need sensory input and often struggle with attention. There is a lot of research that shows a correlation between the subtle movements that seating allows and and increase in students focus and engagement. Therefore, flexible seating would stimulate my students’ sense of touch and help them focus and process information.

These supplies will be utilized by my students who are eager to engage in learning and have fun while learning. Flexible seating such as wobble cushions and fidget bands for the chairs will help my students get the sensory input they need. Research shows that using wobble cushions in place of chairs found an improvement in classroom behavior for children with ADHD. These seats will also provide my students with a sense of support and security, which is extremely calming for students with sensory deficits or Autism.
