My Students

Many of my students are English Language Learners who are excited to learn English but struggle learning in any language. They love to use visuals to support their learning because pictures are international and each picture is like a thousand words in promoting understanding of concepts. I am a bilingual (Spanish/English) Speech Language Pathologist working with a caseload elementary aged children that are residents of Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The majority of my caseload are children of immigrants or children who are immigrants from Latin America and Asia. Sunset Park is primarily a poor, working class community. I am the first Speech therapist at this new school and I am tasked with setting up the "Speech Room." I would like to create a warm, welcoming room with plenty of supplies to last the school year. As language learners we use many visuals and I want to buy worksheets for homework that are easily understood by non English speakers.

My Project

This is a new and growing school with a widely diverse population including many children who learn differently. This school has not had a speech therapy room before. We have the room but need therapy equipment, office supplies, and of course posters to make the space warm and welcoming. I have a caseload of children with more than 6 different home languages whose parents come from mostly Latin America and Asia but include countries from all over the world. Picture based therapy materials aid in presenting new vocabulary and concepts to children, It also allows homework to be sent home for parents who may not read English. By donating to this project you are allowing us to have enough materials to insure the support the children need to reach their goals!
