A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I met my students last year when they entered kindergarten and I was a student-teacher. This year--my first as a full-time educator--they will enter first grade and I'll be their teacher.
So, in this year of Firsts, one thing will remain constant: our classroom community, our relationships; us.
I want for us to have the books and supplies we need to help continue to foster and grow and build these relationships and our community as we learn more about ourselves and our world; about how we're different--I'm white and my students are Black--and how we're the same and how our differences and similarities are each thing to be cherished and celebrated.
I've watched these kids grow and change and meet challenges--regular ones like losing teeth or mastering sight words--and more complex ones like moving to online learning and confronting the myths of their own country. I am infinitely privileged to continue to encourage and admire their accomplishments and efforts with this help.
My Project
At home and in school, my students and I will utilize these tools and resources to make our First Year a success.
As a first-year teacher, this project will allow me to reach and teach all of my students for this year, just as it will help to build my toolbox for years to come.
I believe—like teaching and art—learning is a continued practice that requires patience, diligence, flexibility, and creativity. I teach from my authentic self with radical love and honesty and through humility in my own continued learning which I work to keep culturally-responsive, anti-racist, trauma-informed, inclusive, evolving, and interdisciplinary.
I intend to keep my practice student-centered and reflection-driven, so these are the skills, mindsets, and understandings I hope to teach my students as well as learn from and with them. The supplies on my list will help me do just that.
These items are not inclusive of all our needs and want toward those goals, but they will be invaluable in helping us learn more about ourselves, our communities, and our world.
