My Students

The students at my school live in a high need are- a Title I NYC school. They face many struggles both inside and outside of the classroom; yet, they are resilient and eager to learn.

As an occupational therapist, I service students with special needs ranging from autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, dysgraphia, and learning disabilities.

My goal is to provide students with the resources they need to enhance their participation and independence throughout the school environment. I provide direct, individualized intervention to students, as well as work collaboratively with teachers to support their students in the classroom.

My Project

ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) are defined as vital self-care activities that are performed on a daily basis. These activities include dressing, tooth-brushing, hygiene, feeding, and getting around your environment. Many students with special needs require assistance with completing these tasks independently within the school environment. My goal is for all of my students to be independent in their ADLs.

Independence with ADLs is the first step towards success within the school environment.

When a student is practicing appropriate hygiene, their clothes are on correctly, their shoes are tied, and they can open their own breakfast containers- they are much more likely to have the confidence it takes to stand out in a classroom. As an occupational therapist, I analyze my students' abilities to figure out what is hindering them from achieving independence. Sometimes it is hand strength, sequencing of movements, cognitive abilities, visual difficulties, or dexterity. I work with my students throughout the year to foster independence in all areas, and ADLs are often a great place to start.
