Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This group of students will make up our first graduating class. Over the past few years, I have watched them build their dreams for college and careers beyond that. They know that, in order to succeed in life, they need to read at high levels. That's where a highly varied library comes in.

Many of our students will be the first in their families to go to college.

They live in traditionally low-income neighborhoods that are often surrounded by violence, yet our students strive every single day to make decisions to better both themselves and their community. They have built an incredible school culture and encourage one another every single day. They have seen great growth in their reading and academic abilities in our school and remain devoted to furthering their education.

My Project

On an almost daily basis, a student comes to me and asks me for a book to read. We do not have a school library, so my donated books serve as the primary library for my students. Sometimes, I can find what they're looking for on the shelf. Many times, though, they want a new fantasy or the new realistic fiction book that they've heard about. I often pull the books from my personal library or try to purchase them myself, but unfortunately, I cannot afford to do this all the time. Having these books for my students would allow them to read more varied, modern texts. It would also help my students who are reading at lower reading levels improve their levels so that they can be college-ready, for many of my students are reading five or more grade levels below their actual grade level.

My students want to go to college, but they don't just want to go there.

They want to succeed. They want to graduate. Without strong reading skills, they won't be able to handle the tremendous effort that college requires. As their teacher, I see it as my personal mission to help them realize their dreams. Please join me in providing them with the books they need to see their dreams made real.
