My Students

My robotics team is an eclectic collection of students from AP and IB students to students with special needs. We are one of the oldest teams in South Carolina. In recent years, my team has increased from 17 to 48 students. They attend not only my school, but also schools from adjacent school districts and a few home schooled students. With this degree of diversity, you could almost suspect the team to be fragmented. However, the team is very much like a family, with everyone supporting one another.

The team does more than build robots.

They learn the soft-skills that are important in college and future careers. They learn how to work together, communicate their ideas in ways that others can understand, and they learn to listen to others. During competitions, they recognize that they need to cooperate with other teams to build a winning alliance.

My Project

Last year our FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) team decided to create and support 3 FIRST LEGO League Junior (FLL Jr) Teams in one of our elementary schools. We were hoping that we would have enough interest to "man" the three fledgling teams. To our great surprise, over 40 third grade students vied for the 18 positions. It was heartbreaking to turn away so many students. Next year, we hope to create and support six FLL Jr Teams. Although three additional teams won't accommodate all 40, but it will get us closer.

Each FIRST LEGO League Junior team needs a tablet to program their robotic displays.

The Inspire kits that the teams use includes a programmable WeDo 2.0 Smarthub that requires a Bluetooth capable device. Last year, my high school students who acted as student-mentors for the FLL Jr teams used their personal tablets.

I want the third grade students to have the freedom to play with the WeDo program and the tablets without the concern of working on a personal tablet.
