I am a first grade teacher who teaches at a school who has a majority of English Language Learners. As a first grade teacher I do my best to give these students the proper education to assist them in reading, writing, and speaking. In the month of January my class is going to be learning about how to write a letter and the process of sending a letter. With this in mind, we will be pairing the students in my classroom with students from another first grade classroom who will be studying the same thing. They will each have their own pen pals and will be writing back and for two months. Throughout this whole time they are going to write to one another and learn more about their pen pal without personally meeting them. After the unit is taught they will be introduced. This whole process is very beneficial to the students. They will be writing to other students for their own pleasure, while learning, and reading letters. This will assist them learn how to read and write and enjoy every step of it. I've done this last year and it was great, the children had a blast and learned so much from the experience, they were even writing to me through school mail after they had finished first grade. But the only down fall was that I didn't have the proper equipment. Once I get the proper material the children will be able to better understand the process of writing a letter.
