My Students

Can you imagine 6-year-olds creating blogs and videos, showing the world what they are learning?

I teach a first grade gifted and talented class at a high poverty school in New York City.

As I have not yet met the new children I will have in September, based on the class that I had last year, I expect to have about 24 children, all with extremely diverse needs. I also expect that there will be amazing thinkers with a love for learning and with lots of ideas to share all the time. Many of the children come into the gifted program with a great interest in computers and technology, some are far more advanced than even I am. Others, coming from high poverty areas, don't have the experiences at home to work with technology. I want to provide them with those opportunities as much as possible in school.

My Project

Last year, I kept my own personal digital camera in the classroom all the time, allowing the children to use it and take pictures of their creations. I would love to have more of this type of resource that can be a part of our classroom, available for children to use at any time as part of their learning. I can imagine now, my first graders writing plays and acting them out, singing songs and making up dances, performing or reading, all ideas that they have come up with. Having Flip Video Cameras readily available will allow those moments to be captured and shared with others. The children will be able to post their videos on our blog and share it with their parents. They will be able to make videos as they talk about their ideas, and post them to share with others. They can perform their poetry or read their stories. Flip Video Cameras will also allow the students to watch their own recordings and see what they would like to work on more, or what they can do differently.

As a 2nd year gifted teacher, I have been spending my summer attending workshops and learning as much I can about the best ways to teach gifted children.

I am so excited to guide this upcoming class in inquiry studies and project-based learning, all related to the students' own interests. I don't believe in having every child present their learning in the exact same format. Flip Video Cams will allow them to explore and create what interests them as I guide them along the way!
