Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is an economically disadvantage urban public school with over 70% of the students qualified for free or reduced school lunch. The school population is about 325 students for kindergarten through fifth grade. It consists of three programs: General education program, Spanish bilingual program, and Chinese bilingual program. I am National Board Certified since 2009, and I have been teaching the first-grade Chinese bilingual program for 30 years. Most of my students are new immigrants with parents speaking little or no English at home. For my students, they have the disadvantage of not being read to in their early years. They also do not receive much help with homework with their parents due to the language barrier. However, these parents want the best for their children, and they put all their hopes and dreams in guiding their children as the leaders of tomorrow in my hands! Not only do I teach all the first grade standardized curriculum mandated by my district, but I also maintain the students' first language by teaching Chinese language instruction daily.
My Project
My first graders are curious and creative! My wish is to provide more STEAM learning opportunities for these young minds. Students will begin the engineering process in using LED lights, batteries, and conductive tape to create projects which will enrich their learning for first grade Light and Sound science unit. Using Ozobot Bit , my students will begin to code and program with these mini-robots in small group setting. These robots are the perfect combination of physical and digital worlds for young learners as they can identify lines, colors, and codes. The Samsung tablet will help students to get online to code their robots as a more advanced option.
Students need to have the right technological and art tools to be fully inspired!
Using acrylic paint and glitter on canvas, students will paint like real artists using tabletop easels. Imagine a class full of 6 to 7 years olds painting like artists such as Piccaso or Van Gogh!
I want to provide the newest technology and art supplies for my low economic status students so that when they enter my classroom, their learning opportunity feels "the richest of them all!"
