My Students

I teach in a community school located in a high needs area. My students receive Special Education services. Each school year I find that my kids have a tremendous amount of energy. They enjoy learning but need constant hands-on engagement throughout any lesson.

My kids are so special to me.

They need access to resources that will allow them to learn in all modalities. Everyday I go to work, I want to make it a positive experience for them because that is what each one of them deserves.

New materials will increase the learning in my class and will allow my students to become excited and interested in learning in a way that allows them to discover and appreciate all that education has to offer.

My Project

I am currently finishing up the school year in my first grade classroom. At the beginning of this year, I was in the process of moving into a new classroom. I have always been interested in flexible seating for my kids so I started by ordering a set of six "wobbly chairs". The kids absolutely loved them! After a lot of thought, I have decided to implement flexible seating for each student starting in my class in September. My goal is to have a variety of seating options so that my kids don't have to sit at their desks all day. My classroom is very big so there is a lot of space for a variety of seating. Flexible seating allows the kids to have a choice about where to sit. It lets them consider where they feel they work and learn best. The stools will allow students to sit higher up on raised desks as they write. The medicine ball chairs will have the students bouncing as they read. The lap desks are important because the kids will be able to write anywhere around the room. All materials in this project will benefit my students greatly.

It is important to me that my kids are comfortable.

Through the years, I have found that many students have difficulty sitting down and doing work for the entire time they are expected to. I have observed that students that they work successfully when they are able to stand or even lay down. I believe this project will motivate my students to work for an extended amount of time. I think they will be more eager to complete tasks in areas that are comfortable for them on a daily basis.
