Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is full of 16 different children with 16 different sets of needs. Typically, my students live with their families... mom or dad, siblings, and typical caregivers. Because of the pandemic, my students are at home with grandparents, aunts and uncles, babysitters, and some just with older siblings, because their parents are considered essential. Some have the good fortune of being home with mom and/or dad, but their parents are working from home, which is such a huge adjustment as well.

Mu students need a bit of normalcy right now, especially at a time when everything is so strange and uncertain.

I am doing my best to do some live lessons with them, and speak to them about their day, but this situation is bothering them. Everything they know is just different, and it's a huge adjustment for all.

My Project

Throughout the day in our classroom, my students are using tons of materials. We use whiteboards, markers and erasers to practice math, reading, and phonics skills. We play dice or card games in math almost daily, to practice adding and subtracting or our doubles facts! These materials keep our students learning and practicing skills in the classroom, where we are well-stocked with tools.

Virtual Teaching and Learning brings a challenge for most of our students, who do not have the same tools at home that they are successful using in the classroom.

With your help, I would love the opportunity to be able to provide these materials to my students so they can continue their learning at home. It would be amazing to have them as engaged at home as they are at school, and I would absolutely love the opportunity to provide them with learning tools that they can use with their families, too!

I think social emotional health during this time is just as important as academics, so I added some little greeting cards, bookmarks, and activity books to send the kids too... as a pick-me-up! I know the kids will love the extra fun items, as their parents and family members are busy working from home too, and this has been a huge adjustment for all of them.
