My Students

How would you describe a typical day in your classroom? Let me tell you about our day. After unpacking their things my students usually start the day with a book. This is silent reading time. They all love to read and often complain about the lack of books in our classroom.

My school is located in Harlem, New York, one of the most poverty stricken area in New York.

The majority of the children receive free lunch at my school. We currently do not have a school library in our school so the students rely on the books in the classroom to improve their reading skills and complete reading assignments.

My Project

My students love to read and they often take books home to read overnight. Each night they have to read and complete a book report about the story they read. We also do guided reading and closed reading in our class. As you can see reading makes up a major part of our day's activities. The children also have to be reading on grade level by the end of the school year as required by the common core curriculum.

Having adequate books for my students to read will help to improve their reading skills.

It will also help to them get ready for the next grade. Children need to read and I often emphasize this fact to my students. I would like my students to develop a love for reading from this early stage in their education. Your help will be greatly appreciated and my students will be forever grateful.
