My Project

"Book Club"

The students I teach are at a highly gifted magnet.

In order to challenge my students in reading, we come in every day after recess and do a "Book Club". We enjoy sitting in a circle and reading chapter books together. We use a discussion ball to discuss character development and story elements.

Students come in ready and excited to find out what happens in the next chapter everyday! Their enthusiasm drives their motivation and helps develop a love of reading in all genres!

After we read, my students use a "Book Club" journal to write about the characters and story elements using the Gifted Depth and Complexity Prompts. 1st graders write about Change Over Time, Parallels, Motives, Contributions, and more. It is quite impressive what these 1st graders are capable of doing at such a young age with the best resources!
