Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Thank You for considering this proposal! I am the teacher of 22 wonderful First Grade students at San Pedro St. Elementary School. The school is located in downtown Los Angeles, near the Garment District. It is a 4-Track K-5 school. Our enrollment is about 720 students, where 93.5% are English Language Learners and 100% are Socio-economically disadvantaged.

Almost every First Grader goes through a very hard adjusting process when promoting from Kindergarten to Elementary. In Kindergarten, students still participate in dramatic play and many creative art projects. When students move to 1st Grade they realize that the sole focus becomes reading and writing and many of the "fun activities" in which they used to release their stress and develop their creativity almost become forgotten. As a teacher, I understand the importance of Art and "Fun" in kids’ lives. However the truth is that Art equipment is no longer provided from 1st Grade up anymore.

I believe that the teaching of Fine Arts should not be taken for granted since is very important to develop creativity, independence and balance in students' lives. Talent needs to be nourished and not limited to chance. My project includes 8 sets of Paint cups to organize the temperas. These paint cups are color coded and ensures that paint won’t spill if the cup is tipped. It also includes paint aprons for each student and a paintbrush holder to keep the art area neat.

Help us make the most of our Art time. Your generosity will make it possible for my students to have this wonderful resource at their hands to enhance their painting experience.
