My Students

"By writing much, one learns to write well," Robert Southey said, and students will be writing a lot in my class this year. I am implementing Common Core writing standards in my classroom this year. I am teaching students to write in a variety of styles. We need tools to help in the process.

My students are from Oklahoma.

They attend a Title 1 school and over 60% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. They do not have many of the advantages other students have. Many of their parents are working when students get home and they do not have someone to help with homework. These students are excited and eager to learn each day but they need extra help to be successful.

My Project

Many of my students struggle learning to read and in turn they are not good writers. I am implementing Common Core writing standards this year to improve those skills. I would also like to use a guide called 6 Trait writing system. This program has great results and will be a great tool for improving writing in our classroom. I am requesting the following resources to help implement the program:chart paper, pocket charts, dry erase boards, sentence strips, phonic sing along, and other writing materials. Students will observe the teacher model good writing using chart paper, pocket charts, and dry erase board. Students can share writing and easily edit their work on a dry erase board. We will also work on improved spelling using daily phonics lessons using a fun sing along program.

Teaching children to be great writers and to reflect on what they read will have long term benefits.

The students who are able to write well in a variety of styles will be able to find success in all subjects. These skills will not only help them in elementary school but through high school, college, and career. Thank you for your help with this wonderful, educational opportunity.
