Help Mrs. Lochel

I teach an eager group of 21 first grade students in a great area of South Carolina. Our neighborhood school is a supportive and encouraging environment that has high expectations for all children that enter.

One unit that my first grade students are particularly fond of is plant life. They love to learn about how plants are living things that grow and change...but we simply do not have the resources we need for the children to read and learn more about the life cycle of plants.

As a teacher I try to integrate literacy into every subject I teach. The obstacle here in this science unit is that I just do not have the informational books I need to be able to provide the students with. Sure, we have some books available in our library, but living in the fastest growing school district in our state makes it difficult to get what you need when 8 other teachers need it too. With this set of books, the students would be able to experience the life cycle of plants through literacy. They would be able to indulge in the informational language of the books and beautiful photographs. Children need to see how different plants are grown and how this relates to our economy on a larger scale like how farmer's grow food for us to eat. Using the flower stamp set, they would also be able to put to use what they've read in these books by stamping a diagram and labeling it accordingly.

By supporting this project, you will be directly making a difference in the lives of 21 bright 1st graders. They are the gardeners, planters, and farmers of our future. Help start them off right by funding this important project. Help them continue to live literacy rich lives as they learn about the science of the world.
