This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“All I need is a sheet of paper and something to write with, and then I can turn the world upside down.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
My students are becoming stronger writers every day. Their biggest challenge is to feel like writers, and I try to build them up daily.
My students are 24 wonderful first grade students from all over Stamford, Connecticut.
We spend time daily doing reading, writing, social studies, science, and math, which binds us together as a group of wonderful little learners! Although we do have a large class, we are learning to work together and help each other - the basis of teamwork!
My students come from so many different backgrounds, both socially and emotionally. They are from households that primarily speak another language at home, so they are tackling the challenge of learning a new language, on top of new content. I try to make learning engaging and fun for all of my students, and writing is no exception. That is where this project comes in! There is very little more exciting than writing a book. Having it bound like a book will absolutely overjoy my first grade learners!
My Project
My students write daily. They spend hours out of their days writing about content, writing narratives, and writing non-fiction books. Adding the binding machine and comb bindings to my classroom will allow me the opportunity to have all of my students publish their writing in book format, which they will absolutely love. They can share their writing as books with the class, their families, and our school community.
In addition to publishing my students' work, I plan on using the binding machine to create mini-books for our listening center. I tend to record material for the students that would not normally be in book format, to go with some of our learning songs and skills. I have mini-books to go with these songs and chants that I will be printing and putting in the listening center for my students to use during reader's and writer's workshop.
Children do not magically walk into school feeling like a reader or a writer.
We need to build up their confidence and work on making them feel like what they have to say is important. I know that these materials will help me make each student feel like his work is valued. Turning their loose pages into actual books, especially after they have worked so hard, will help my students feel accomplished. There is nothing more powerful than that!
