Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 25 first grade students in a low socio-economic area. Most of my students are on free or reduced lunch. We are a project improvement school. Due to budget cuts, our school cut the weekly reader program. If we want it for our classrooms the teachers have to pay for it.

Many of my students are lacking a home library. When they are asked to read nightly, a lot of the kids read the same few books over and over again. That is whey I feel it is my duty to provide an extensive library in the classroom for the children to read. The only place they get to chose books to read is at school. I have many fiction books in the library, but I am lacking non-fiction. The weekly readers would be a great addition to classroom reading.

Weekly Readers would be a perfect match for my class. They provide information on current events, science and social studies written on a first grade level with many colorful and detailed pictures. Many non-fiction texts are too hard and boring for first graders. Weekly Readers focus on teaching the topic while also introducing vocabulary development, study skills and comprehension. What is so great about the weekly readers is that they are written like a newspaper. Each child gets their own copy. They can underline, circle, color or write in them. Also, once we are finished with them in class, the kids can take them home to share what they have learned with their parents or siblings. Hopefully, they will keep these and add them to their libraries at home, thus increasing their print material at home.

With the help of your donation you will allow 25 first grade students to experience what it feels like to open a newspaper and learn about what is happening in the world. Not only will they be learning about a specific topic for that week, they will be improving their reading skills as well. Thank you in advance for your generous donation.
