My Students

People often ask me why I commute so far away to teach when I could work in a much more affluent community closer to where I live. The simple answer is because I have never been a happier teacher than when I'm with my students.

They make me smile, laugh, sing, and dance, and challenge me everyday.

There are 5 different primary languages in my homeroom this year, the entire district receives free breakfast and lunch due to high poverty levels and there's no where else I'd rather be.

My Project

First Grade is a fascinating time that is filled with learning. Over the years I have found that one of the biggest struggles that my students have is that they lack background knowledge. When it comes to learning how to read and write, a lack of background knowledge can be devastating,

Students are naturally curious learners and they need access to high quality reading material to keep that passion alive.

I tell my students all the time that the best way to learn to be a better reader is by simply reading, however, many of my students do not have anything to read in their homes. With a subscription to Time for Kids, students will have access to exciting nonfiction reading material other than books that they will be able to keep and bring home with them to read again and again.
