My Students

Our school is located in the heart of Queens and comprised of students from diverse backgrounds and varying socio-economic status. Weeks ago, several of my students had been calling out sick, being absent for days at a time and many of those that were present, seemed sleepy and showing cold-like symptoms. Back then, we had no idea we would be forced to shelter-in place and figure out how to teach and learn from our homes. Even though we have been far apart, we have been closer than ever through our common situations. Everyday, I am learning more about my students and their families.

I know many of my students have parents that are first responders and essential workers and can not often see their parents everyday.

I also know many of their family members are sick from this virus and must be quarantined. It makes learning difficult. That is why teachers need to adapt and grow to fit the needs of their students.

My Project

You can take the teacher out of the school, but you can't take the school out of the teacher! If you know a teacher, you know they are always thinking about their students (whether they like it or not). During this Covid-19 Pandemic especially, teachers are teaching from their homes and caring for their students from afar.

I want to deliver hugs, smiles, and fun in a personalized bag that lets my students know I haven't forgotten them and soon they will return to school ready to pick up not where they left off, but with all the new things they've learned while being at home.

Each student will receive a colorful, decorated bag with their name on it (handwritten by me). Included in the bag are items that I've carefully chosen that will hopefully inspire their minds, hearts and bodies! Cute color pencils, blank writing books and etching pads will let them use their imaginations. Foam modeling clay, Wiki sticks and squishy balls will calm and soothe anxious hearts. Jump ropes will get their bodies in motion, indoors or outdoors.

I can't wait to be able to assemble these care packages and hand-deliver them myself to their homes. Can you imagine the looks on their faces when they see their first-grade teacher after so many weeks? Or maybe I just needed an excuse to see their faces... please help me make this possible!
