Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a first grade class of 20 students in a low socio-economic area. Many of my students come into first grade low in English skills. Many have grown up speaking Spanish so reading and writing in English is my main focus this year. We are a Project Improvement School. Our school does not have much money for teachers to buy "fun" learning activities for children.

My students come into first grade at a skills disadvantage. They are still trying to grasp the English language. Working with kids in a small group is the best way to teach to each child's need and skill... BUT... that leaves the other children in the class to work by themselves. (Our school does not provide aides for the teachers). So I need to provide fun and engaging LEARNING activities for the children to do while I am not instructing them.

I am asking for learning center activities for the children to do independently or in a very small group. These activities are learning games which the children can enjoy playing and at the same time learn, too. The puzzles I am asking for build language skills. Each box includes 12 two-piece puzzles that focus on the same vowel sound- with a picture on one side and the word on the other. They need to match the 2 pieces together. This helps with reading, spelling and vocabulary development. The other puzzle set works on putting letters together to form words that match a picture. There are also puzzles that have a simple sentence cut into 2 parts and the children have to then match the pieces to form the sentence. I am asking for a tub of letters and a tub of words. The tubs have activity cards that the children must complete by spelling words or creating sentences using the tiles in the tubs. The last item is a kit for the overhead projector that can be used whole class. The kit includes letters which I can manipulate to show children how words are formed.

With your donation you will make it possible for me to teach a small groups of children. While I am teaching them I can give them all of my attention. I will know that I will have activities that the other children in the class will be excited to engage in.
