My Students

My first graders are eager and motivated to learn! They love to touch, move and manipulate materials to experiment and solve problems! There is a wide range of abilities and learning styles in my class so the challenge for me is to have different means and methods to spark the flame of learning!

I would love to provide a plethora of hands-on experiences and activities to master math skills and develop problem-solving skills!

My students love to call themselves math wizards! They bask in the light of self-discovered solutions; smiles and cheers are shared by all. I know that my students are ready to dive into new learning challenges!

I teach in a self-contained classroom in New Jersey. Our inner-city school district has a majority of students from low economic backgrounds. Most students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. They have limited materials and resources at home or school to fully develop these key areas of learning. Resources and practice are needed to raise confidence and performance levels. Keeping them motivated about their developing math abilities with these new materials will be exciting!

My Project

My first graders are ready to run with new challenges in Math! They have worked diligently on number recognition and beginning operations of addition and subtraction. Now, the next step is to apply prior knowledge and develop skills to build problem-solving strategies.

Practice in developing problem-solving skills, using these hands-on materials, will be the key to success for my students!

The math skills, engineering, building block, construction plank, and brick STEM learning centers will provide the students with multiple activities using differentiated levels of practice to meet the needs of all of my class. Using the math journals on a daily basis will further encourage problem-solving and build math wizards, as we say in first grade!

Having the right materials and opportunities for practice, both independently and in small learning communities will promote positive experiences with math. This will build confidence in each child's ability to become a successful and lifelong mathematician!
