My Students

My First Grade special needs classroom is an incredible mix of learners that inspire me each day. First grade is a crucial grade where students will learn to read and write. It is the building block grade for all of their future learning.

As young learners, lessons need to be fun and interactive in order to stimulate their curiosity and keep them engaged.

Many fundamental concepts in reading, writing, as well as math and science, are introduced for the first time, which can create a real challenge for young learners without the proper tools.

My students have shown they learn best when they are allowed to absorb and practice what they learn at their own pace, have choices in activities to practice what they learned, and are provided multiple opportunities to show what they know. My first-grade students learn to love learning and build their confidence through these practices.

My Project

I am lucky enough to teach special needs first-grade students in Queens, NY. One tool that has proven to be extremely valuable in the classroom is the use of whiteboards. I am requesting a set of new whiteboards for my students.

First grade is where students will learn to read and write and whiteboards are used during almost all lessons.

When we are writing during lessons are responding to questions as a whole group, students use the boards to write their answers privately and then raise them to show the teacher. This is a key assessment tool that allows me to quickly assess their understanding. We use the same strategy with math problems. Misunderstandings are corrected immediately before we move on in the lesson. Additionally, the whiteboards add a very necessary kinesthetic aspect to our lessons in first grade.

Over the years, the whiteboards have become stained and overused a set of new whiteboards would be a very appreciated addition to our classroom. Many of my students will be back in the classroom for the first time in over a year. I would like to provide them each with a new board to use in class for our upcoming school year. Please help me in providing this for them.
