This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
This list is an accumulation of items that I have seen impact first graders in my classroom. My goal for this project is to elevate my students' experiences by supplying them with whatever it is they might need throughout the day in order to be successful.
There are many things that make our students so special, but what I find most special about the first graders is how independent they become in such a short time span.
Independent in their feeling, thinking, and learning. Through this independence, I hope to foster an environment where students advocate for the tools they need to be successful in their learning.
I start my list off with a few workbook resources. It is my goal to continue to reinforce those pencil and paper skills as students are developing critical fine motor skills in their hands, along with their comprehension. I hope to see students become more comfortable and fluent with their writing.
Following up the workbooks, I have listed what I hope is a plethora of portion-sized snacks. This is probably my biggest personal expense as a teacher. Food insecurity occurs too often with children, and it impacts our students firsthand. A child cannot learn on an empty stomach. I am hoping to minimize the struggle that occurs when hungry students are expected to learn, and encourage students to advocate for themselves in times when they might need access to food.
Lastly, in an effort to reinforce those analog practices with excitement, I added some collections of popular children's books. I want students to experience the magic that comes with fully immersing themselves in literature. But more importantly, I hope to foster an environment where students independently develop their own interests and preferences when it comes to reading.
