This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Some students escape to the next grade level without the appropriate foundation. At some point, it is nearly impossible to catch up. Students that are not on grade level exhibit low self-esteem which can affect a student's entire school career. The buck stops here. Dropping out is not an option.

This is my eighth year at this school but the students have the same issues as the school where I previously taught.

As a veteran teacher of 20 years, I have taken on the challenge. During the beginning of the year assessments, the staff usually notices that some students are not reading at grade level. The low socioeconomic level of these students doesn't help. How can a student do his/her homework without electricity? How can a student listen to a lesson when his/her stomach is louder than the teacher's voice? Hopefully, as a First Grade teacher in a low socio-economic, I can be the vessel that can stop the cycle of poverty and lay a foundation of success.

The portable CD player will allow my students to listen to what a model for great reading should sound like as well as have the opportunity to read along. The classroom letter kit allows my students to create their own words by sounding out consonant vowel consonant words then later create their own simple sentences. The fun little toys are like LEGO bricks. This allows them to have creative opportunities when they finish their work early without disrupting anyone else.
