Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade at a public charter school in Washington, DC. Two thirds of our students are considered high-poverty students. What is great about our school is that we not only believe all children can achieve an excellent education, but that children from diverse backgrounds can get that excellent education under one roof. So our school is about 50% African American, 30% Hispanic, and 20% white.

When you're six years old, it's hard to concentrate sometimes. It's not that you don't want to focus on your work -- it's just that what the person next to you and across to you looks like so much more fun! Sitting at tables allows my students to work collaboratively for most of the day, however at certain times of the day it is important for them to work independently. Right now that's tough.

We need privacy partitions to set up a "mini-office" at each student section of the table. During writing time, test-taking time, and independent work times the partitions will help my students stay focused, and it will help the teachers know what each student can really do independently.

You will make it much easier for my wiggly, distract-able, loveable, brilliant students to focus on their work when it is time to work alone. Thank you in advance!
