My Students
Every child deserves the opportunity to be read to. Having a set of four iPods for students to use to listen to books will provide them the opportunities to have someone read to them, while they hear the reader model the correct fluency that comes with a lot of practice.
My school is a Title 1 school in a large city with a high poverty rate.
Many of our students do not come to school with the basic supplies they need to start the year, including crayons, pencils, notebooks, and in some cases, even uniforms. Our school is suffering from the same budget cuts many schools in our country are facing, and the money for necessities for our classroom is limited. The money to replace outdated or worn out educational materials is even more difficult to find. The teachers in my district spend money out of their own pockets to ensure they have everything necessary to teach their students.
Many of my students come from homes where they have one parent, or their parents work odd hours or multiple jobs. Their parents have limited time to spend reading with them. Students come to school without having been exposed to many books. They are eager to hear adults read stories to them, and love to hear their favorite stories read over and over again. They love to learn.
My Project
One of the literacy centers we have in our classroom is "Listen to Reading" and it is a favorite of all of my students. With a traditional listening center, all the students listen to one story on a tape while they follow along with one book to share. If we had four iPods and several sets of read along books for our listening center, students can choose a place anywhere in the room to relax and follow along as they hear a fluent reader modeling correct speed, expression, and accuracy. Many of the students will fluently read along with their favorite parts! They listen to their favorites over and over again.
The iPods allow flexibility because I can put different stories on each iPod for my students to choose from. The books on CD allow me to import the stories onto the iPods without the fear of scratched Cds or broken tapes. These stories allow the students to play with words through rhyme and rhythm, and offer strategies on conflict resolution and self concept through classic children's literature.
By funding this project, you are giving my students the opportunity to be read to over and over again.
Hearing fluent reading is very important for first graders who are carefully taking their first steps towards becoming fluent readers. Being a fluent reader motivates students to continue to read, and practicing reading with the correct expression, speed and accuracy is one way to achieve this goal. This project is one step on the path towards creating a classroom full of students who love reading.
