My Students

Students in our school have few experiences and prior knowledge, due to their language barriers and low socioeconomic status. They need opportunities to learn about science and the world around them through literature and self discovery.

My class is about 60 percent Hispanic and I have four of nineteen that have severe special needs.

They attend an inner city school with a population of 550. Most all students live in low income housing within one to two miles of the school. Many of their parents are incarcerated and they need all the help they can get.

My Project

I am requesting a subscription to Time For Kids, a Clifford book set, dice and a word making game. Due to the lack of experiences and resources, my students need these materials to apply their knowledge to the real world and create background knowledge. The children will be able to read and look at images of things that they never imagined. They may have read or heard of things in science and the world but now they will have pictures, books, and models.

These children need opportunities to see and learn about things that their socioeconomic status has limited.

It is not their fault and these materials can drastically improve their learning.
