My Students

There is something special about the students in my school and in my classroom. These students are independent, protective and eager. Students whom I spend time with day in and day out, come from very low income families and from very diverse backgrounds. These students need the support and rapport from the individuals who interact with them daily within the school community. Based on the high needs of these students, each school day can be challenging but rewarding.

Each student in my classroom is very eager to learn and to grow; however, with the challenges they face outside of the classroom, they need extra support within the classroom.

Within our school, we serve and support various students that come into our school not kindergarten ready or new to our country. Students come into our school lacking letter recognition skills and phonics skills. Teaching our students to read and meeting the student right where they are, is a big rock that we commit to each and everyday. Finding motivation within the students can be challenging and so, it is incredibly important to make reading fun and highly rigorous.

My Project

For some of our students, at-home libraries are scarce. Something that is needed majorly in the lives of our students is the need of getting books into our students hands, Books that are developmentally appropriate for the students will encourage the push of reading for enjoyment rather than frustration. By using the materials requested, students will have access to books that are at their independent reading level, as well as books that push them to continue to build their knowledge of reading and their knowledge of sight words through reading.

Our students are eager to learn to read and show such excitement when they finally have that "ah-ha" moment and realize they can read!

Students will be able to engage in hands-on learning during guided reading with the use of the Rhyming Snap Dogs, Phonics Dominoes and Phonics Word Family Game. Guided Reading is something that works tremendously well in the classroom for teaching students to read, as it works on multiple aspects of reading as a first grade student, such as reading to self, listening to others reading, sight word recognition, comprehension skills and phonics skills. By using these materials, I will be able to allow students access to building CVC words and sight words in engaging ways. Students will be able to listen to themselves reading with the Reading Phones to build confidence.

It is important to build confidence in our students as they are learning to read so that we can grow their wealth of knowledge tremendously. It is highly important that students are able to read for their own academic experience and with these resources, our students will be able to soar academically at an early age and will be able to jump right into reading without being intimated.
