My Students

A walk into my classroom is a step through a porthole into a world of wonder. Questions beget questions and my students thrive on inquiry. Echoes of "What ifs" and "I wonder whys" continually bounce off the walls in the room. Help us take the first step on our journey to the heart of the question.

At any given time you would find up to 32 eager students engaged in their experience.

These students range in age from 9 to 13 years old. They consist of 4th through 8th grade students who have been identified as gifted learners in an urban setting. Though they come from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds they share common educational ambitions. Love for learning and the exceptional ability to understand and apply complex ideas are innate forces that govern each student's learning experience. These are students who absolutely love a challenge. They readily engage in project-based learning, embrace design theory and excel with problem-solving endeavors. My students thrive on the attainment of knowledge and also on the advancement of it. They are encouraged to channel their unique talents to produce "intellectual artifacts" that demonstrate their ideas. They produce videos, write songs/poems and even code video games to advertise what they have learned.

My Project

First Edu-dition will be the first digital news magazine show written/produced by students. The concept is to produce a bi-weekly news show that provides in-depth insight into the inner workings of our school. It is a digital platform for students to display their talents. Segments of the show reflect our school community. There will be in-depth teacher interviews, current events, editorials, a serial soap opera and short documentaries designed to highlight aspects of our school. The video program will serve not only as a means of communication with the school community; it will also serve as a validation of our mission. Amazing things happen every moment of our school day. Capturing these moments and sharing them with the community provides amplification of student voice and motivation to do more. Having a MacBook, a DSLR and 2 point and shoot cameras provide us with the hardware necessary to produce digital media shows capable of capturing our amazing talents in powerful ways.

First Edu-dition will lend voice to an amazing group of students who are eager to share their perspective with the world.

Your donation to this project will help capture small bits of imagination, allow us to showcase these sparkling moments and to validate the terrific work of the wonderful students at the school. The spirit of First Edu-dition is focused on the advancement of knowledge and the sharing of the unique and mystical journey that is our learning experience.
