I am an AP English teacher, athletic director, and basketball coach at an alternative high school in South Los Angeles and for me there is no separating academics from athletics. There are lessons best taught with books, others best taught on the playing field or court. But sports does not merely teach sportsmanship, cooperation, teamwork, and respect. Critical thinking, abstract reasoning, logical deduction and induction -- they are all a part the athletic experience.

The athletic program I run has no budget. Zero. Without the vending machines and student store that produce revenue for large high schools, we are expected to fund-raise thousands of dollars to support our athletic program. But with most of our students living below the federal poverty line, this can be an overwhelming challenge.

Our athletic program needs many things. One of them is first aid equipment. Though we take precautions to prevent injuries, in high school interscholastic sports, they are inevitable. Having a generous supply of first aid supplies sometimes also means helping our opponents -- some of them even more financially strapped then we are -- when they get hurt.

These five first aid kids will ensure that our athletes and coaches will be prepared to handle the potential risks of athletic competition to the same degree as teams from affluent schools and school districts. Our athletes are proud of their accomplishments -- in sports and in the classroom -- and they are always inspired to know that people care about them and their well-being.
