Firekeeper's Daughter and Mexican Gothic

Help me give my students access to two novels: Firekeeper's Daughter, a thrilling novel that takes place on an Indian Reservation, and Mexican Gothic, a creepy mystery that takes place in 1950's Mexico.

My Students

My students live in a small, close-knit community. They are very close and for the most part, they all get along. Students come from different backgrounds. We have farming families, as well as students that help out at home with part-time jobs or help their families run businesses.

Many of my students live in poverty, and cannot afford the classroom materials they need to be successful.

Despite this, many of my students love to read. Because our community is small, we do not have a public library that students can visit to check out books. They love to read all kinds of books, from mysteries to sports, to adventure.

My Project

These novels will be used in my "college in the high school" novels class. Several of the competencies for the class relate to diversity and examining topics relating to race, ethnicity, etc. I would like to use these books to widen that examination. Native American literature and literature from Latin writers are areas that I could improve on.

Students will read and discuss the literary elements, as well as the diverse topics found within the novels.

Firekeeper's Daughter will lead into some great teachable moments relating to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, and Mexican Gothic will allow us to have some great conversations about Mexican literary style.
