Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a NYC Title I public school in Corona, NY, serving a large immigrant community. I have been a teacher in this school for over 30 years and have the privilege of teaching computer science/technology to my students in third through fifth grade. I try to provide a fun and engaging learning environment in my computer classes while encouraging their curiosity and love of computer science.

Most of our students come from low-income households and are English language learners.

Many of them have special needs and do not have access to computers and technology outside of school. Despite their challenges in and out of the classroom, our students are always willing and eager to learn. They are especially excited to explore and apply their technology skills and I want to make sure they have the opportunity to engage in computer science/STEM activities.

My Project

My students have been working on improving their coding skills each week during their computer science class time by using various coding websites such as code.org, Scratch, and MadeWithCode. By using these block-based programming sites, they are practicing coding skills such as sequencing, creating loops, debugging, and using conditionals. They are excited to apply these skills to programming various robots!

My students need a Sphero Bolt robot and Kindle Fire tablets to apply their coding skills in a block-based programming language to problem solve and program the robots to complete various tasks.

During our computer class periods, they will work collaboratively in cooperative groups using mathematical and computational thinking as well as their STEM skills. Using and programming the Sphero Bolt robot with the Fire tablet will prepare our young learners to become computational thinkers who understand how today's digital tools can help solve tomorrow's problems. You will be helping to prepare the leaders of tomorrow!
