Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at our school are a special group of middle school students. If you have ever met a middle school student then you know that often they are filled with an amount of energy and curiosity that, if tapped, could power a small town. Many of my students' families struggle to support their child's well being and significant numbers of my students are recent immigrants. Our school is faced with meeting the needs of a diverse student population that is consistently struggling financially and academically at-risk.

This has not hampered our students' eagerness and desire to learn and our teachers' devotion to teaching, but our school needs as much help as it can get.

Many of these students struggle to make it to class on time because they are trying to get their younger siblings ready for school. Many of my students are often a major caregiver for their younger siblings.

My Project

This year has been radical. It has been full of ups and downs. I've learned a lot about my students from watching them on Zoom calls and hearing their voices struggle with the pandemic, but they've kept going.

This year we have branched away from a curriculum that focused on one or two books to one that has them reading several by diverse authors.

Starting a new curriculum isn't easy. Starting it halfway through the school year is hard. Doing all of that in the middle of a pandemic is out right insane. In the before times I'd ask for books that students have directly asked for so they could bring those books home and keep.

These books are for us to do whole new units. Units that are quick and measure the skills they need against texts that are diverse. PLUS I GET TO TEACH A GRAPHIC NOVEL. Oh my god, I'm so excited about teaching a comic that I can't type right. My autocorrect is going crazy.

I'm excited to teach these books. This play. This story. This author.

Share in my excitement.

Help fight the good fight with me.

Help me get these books where they belong.

Into the minds and hearts of my students.
