Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project aims to create customized Fine Motor Skills Work Kits to support students with significant cognitive disabilities in developing and strengthening their fine motor abilities. These skills are crucial for everyday tasks such as writing, eating, dressing, and other essential self-care activities. The kits will be used during daily center rotations, providing structured, hands-on opportunities for students to engage in activities that promote fine motor development in an enjoyable and accessible way.

The kits will include a variety of tools and materials that are specifically designed to target different aspects of fine motor development.

For example a geoboard allows students to create patterns, shapes, and designs using rubber bands, which promotes the development of their pincer grasp and fine motor coordination. This tool will be used to engage students in creating simple to complex shapes, improving both their precision and hand-eye coordination. To further support development, the kits may also include materials for activities like lacing cards, buttoning and zipping boards, tweezers for picking up small objects, and sensory play tools. These activities will encourage the use of hand muscles, finger strength, and the ability to manipulate small objects, which are essential for daily tasks such as dressing and eating.

The goal of this project is to enhance students’ fine motor skills in a fun, interactive way, helping them to build strength and dexterity. By providing these work kits, I hope to empower students to gain greater independence in self-care activities and daily routines. This initiative will foster the development of vital skills that students can carry with them into all aspects of their lives, enhancing their ability to function independently and confidently.
