Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have an amazing group of students who live in inner city Fresno. I would like to provide them with the skills to reflect, relax and recharge by slowing down through the practices of yoga. We live in inner city Fresno, with all of the stressors of a typical urban life. Many of my students were shocked by how peaceful they felt last year when we took a trip to see the ocean. I would like to use music, recorded sounds of nature and yoga to help them realize that the same feelings and reflection can be possible despite our ability to change our external environment.

My Project

Elementary students living and learning, in the urban environment of an inner city school, will be able to learn the value of pausing for reflection and finding balance through the practice of yoga. We will practice yoga three times a week as part of our PE schedule. This opportunity is potentially life changing as many of my students have not yet developed coping strategies for stress or anxiety, within relationships and in their environment. Rather than trying to implement more stringent external methods of control in our school setting, I would like to help them develop internal skills that will help them to become well balanced and self controlled leaders..
