My Students

I work at an elementary school in Utah where my students include a diverse group of unique, fun, and kind kids. They are from several different classrooms and grade levels in the school. Their work with me helps them realize that they are not alone in their experiences and struggles.

My students are resilient boys and girls who refuse to be deterred by their circumstances.

Abuse, childhood trauma, parental divorce, anxiety, negative self-esteem, and learning disabilities are only a few of the factors that they may encounter in their personal lives... However, this does not prevent them from constantly wanting to learn more and do better. Each student I work with is determined to apply the social skills, anxiety reduction strategies, and coping skills that we learn together.

My Project

With the negative after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the return to school after a year of virtual learning for many, I have noticed high levels of anxiety and stress among students. My goal is to foster a safe environment for kids to visit, such as a Wellness Room. Due to logistical barriers at my school, like the lack of physical space and limited supervision for students, I am unable to dedicate an entire room to such an initiative. Instead, I have decided to set up a table outside my office that I will introduce to students as the "Calm Corner". A space such as this one will likely increase academic productivity and improve overall well-being by allowing students to take a break when they need it.

I would like to extend this space to all 1,000+ students at my school and allow them to take a break at the Calm Corner, when needed.

With this funding, I will be able to buy supplies to set up the Calm Corner for my students. The materials I purchase will include tools that fulfill sensory needs, relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and improve coping skills, such as fidgets, art and craft supplies, and children's books. I believe that this initiative will help students to destress and regulate their emotions on a daily basis. It will also help them grow into emotionally healthy citizens in the future. My hope is that establishing this space will even benefit teachers in the long run by reducing behavior concerns in the classroom and helping students to become more productive learners.
