This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Claremont Community School:

P.S.42 is a community school that serves over 300 students in grades PK-5 in the Bronx.

Surrounded by four housing shelters, P.S. 42 welcomes yearly a high number of students in temporary housing. Currently, the school’s has 30% of the student population in temporary housing. The Claremont neighborhood in which the school is situated was also one of the South Bronx areas hit hardest by the pandemic with one of the highest positivity rates just a year ago. Students experienced several school closures due to the positive COVID-19 cases that continued to arise at school. In fact, one of its students mourned the loss of a highly involved parent.

Despite the challenges, P.S. 42 has maintained one of the highest attendance rates in its school District. The school’s current daily attendance average is over 91%, illustrating our student’s resiliency and capacity to overcome the barriers to their education. As we continue to heal and recover from the loses of the pandemic, we see P.S. 42 students’ growth and healing through their capacity to be present, fostering a close knit community where students and families know one another and can come together to mourn and celebrate one another.

My Project

Students around the world have been adversely affected by the pandemic. Our students pushed through it and attended school more than 91% of the time during a pandemic. Our students have missed a significant part of their childhoods and we would like for our students to have a small piece of it back.

These board games will allow our students to continue to develop their social skills, cognitive brain function, focus and soothe their anxieties.

Most importantly, it will encourage time for play and unleash their creativity which all students need to thrive.
