My Students
Our classroom is an inclusive one, which means some of the students are high performing general education students while others are overcoming various challenges as special education students. Some of these challenges include autism, speech and language impairments and visual impairments.
It's wonderful to see the students in our class all accept each other and learn from one another despite their differences.
Besides their learning differences, our school's population is also very diverse. Located in the heart of Queens, NY we have many immigrant students who have recently moved to America. On the other hand, we also have many students whose parents and grandparents were raised right in Queens and even attended our school!
My Project
In second grade, students are expected to learn how to identify and count coins and dollar bills. We have noticed that over the years this skill has become increasingly more difficult for students. Perhaps this is due to the fact that so many people are now using cards to pay for items rather than actual money. Our students come to us having very little prior knowledge about coins and currency.
It is our hope that the materials we have requested will help our students become more financially literate.
We plan on using the large magnetic coins to keep track of the days we have been in school. This daily visual representation will not only help students become more comfortable with identifying coins, but will also teach them the value of coins. The coin stampers will allow us to create a math center where students can work with partners to create and solve money word problems. Lastly, the math themed books will allow us to create a "Financial Literacy" book bin in our classroom library. By incorporating all these new items into our classroom we feel our students will become much more financially literate. To be financially secure in the future, we need to set the foundation now in second grade!
