Help Ms. Wood

Teaching tweens and teens the basic concepts of spending habits, budgeting, investing, donating, and earning money is even more important today given our county's current economic situation.

As late tweens and early teens, my 7th grade students are bombarded with advertisements and marketing campaigns. Research shows that they are the number one age group for "spenders" in this country. We have entertainment companies and retail stores that cater only to this narrow age span. These children must learn to spend and manage their money (and their parents' money!)wisely. Many Middle School level student have difficulty utilizing non-fiction materials. In Elementary grades, they are mainly exposed to fiction materials. The layout, writing style, and reading levels of non- fiction materials can be quite challenging to a 7th grade student. In order to help my students, I try to keep a variety of non-fiction materials in the classroom. I have purchased several magazine subscriptions and have some books to choose from as well. We do SSR--silent sustained reading on a daily basis for 20 minutes. I try to choose books and periodicals that are high interest to this age group. These students are very interested in money, of course. They enjoy learning about the dynamics of the stock market, how savings accounts really work, and what interest on a credit card really costs you.

I am requesting several non-fiction books such as "Motley Fool's Guide to Money for Teens" and the "Teen Girl's Guide to Money". All of the books are basic guides that give an overview of various aspects of money.

I currently have 2 copies of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Money for Teens" and they are always gone off the shelf. I know that there is both the need and, most importantly, the desire for students to attain financial literacy at an early age. You will make it possible for my students to begin learning the basic skills they will need to be financially responsible citizens in the future.
