Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In order to fully understand new concepts such as financial literacy, my students need to visualize new ideas and have them come to life. Technology will enable students to master the rigorous Common Core curriculum, in spite of the tremendous budget cuts, and help us see our learning.

I teach a group of twenty-four 5th grade students who are inspired by the community they live in, and enjoy reading about, and making connections to other children their age from different cultures.

Our school predominantly serves socioeconomically disadvantaged students and families who are learning English as a second language. My students take pride in their neighborhood and treasure their culture and bilingualism. A large percentage of my students come from a single-parent home. After-school programs are provided to the students. This ensures academic progress for kids and assists our families with child care, giving them the opportunity to hold jobs. Our school is located in California. We opened our doors in 1914, and in 2014 we will be celebrating our centennial! We provide classes for Preschoolers through 6th Grade. We currently have approximately 800 students enrolled.

My Project

My students need an Elmo document camera and iPad mini to add a visualization component to help with rigorous math and financial literacy concepts. When teaching math problem solving and financial literacy concepts like budgeting and savings, my students will be able to use the Elmo document camera to visualize different strategies and concepts. The Elmo also allows for recording student strategies in solving math. They will record their process and evidence and learn from mistakes and successes. The iPad mini can be paired with the Elmo to access a wide variety of kid-friendly apps such as Make Change, Money for Kids, and Mathmateer. These are three great examples of fun, interactive money apps that promote problem solving and the value of money.

It is important to empower our students and give them the chance to succeed.

Your donations will make a tremendous impact on my students. If they are given the knowledge to understand the world and the wisdom to change it, then the sky is the limit for them and for their families! I hope you extend a helping hand in promoting financial literacy instruction.
