My Students

Wall Street may have a roller coaster day, but just what does that mean to children? It's never too early to learn how to manage one's money, and there are some great resources for supporting financial literacy for elementary school students.

My students attend fifth grade in a New York City public school in the borough of Queens.

We are one of the most diverse areas of the nation and the many cultures represented give us a global perspective. With that we are attuned to events occurring around the world. Our international school community recognizes education's critical role in upward mobility and there is an emphasis on the need to academically succeed. For that reason we are charged with the responsibility of providing the best resources and tools for learning for a student body that is highly motivated. My fifth graders are eager learners requiring our school to provide many avenues for learning. That means we have to be innovative, especially when we approach the field of financial literacy.

My Project

To bolster financial literacy I have requested 3 CASHFLOW for Kids and 3 Daytrader board games to be played by groups of students. These are exciting and yes, even volatile financial games that require students to acquire the knowledge essential for making sound financial investments and good economic decisions. Better to make the mistake in a board game than with one's actual savings. The ten calculators requested with a range of capabilities will help students evaluate the value of the portfolios they create during their investment simulations. A modestly priced HP laptop will support research of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds students might consider for investment. The GoPro camera with memory card will be used to document students' experiences and insights as to what they have learned. The camera is durable and can be taken home on loan to develop student created videos sharing those experiences as a result of playing the games and conducting research.

This project has assembled hands-on and virtual resources combining differentiated 21st century learning styles in support of financial literacy.

The board games, the laptop with CD/DVD burning capability to document and preserve student experiences, the calculators for monitoring the value of portfolios, and the GoPro video camera to record student reflections all support a comprehensive plan for introducing and enhancing student understanding of finance. What a cool way to learn.
