This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and eager to learn. Despite the setbacks they face at such a young age, they still persevere and shine during school. My kids are my everything. They inspire me to be a better teacher every day. My students and I are lifelong learners. Learning is a way for my students to escape. I want school to be a safe place for them to come and learn in whatever style works best for them! I am hoping that together my students can continue to be successful and pursue their love of learning.

My Project

In first grade we introduce coin recognition and teach students about good and services. We have 1 kids cash register in the classroom and it has been a great tool to use when practicing combining coins. Our class uses the supplies to create financial games in the classroom. My students play store and practice counting different coin amounts for the food they purchased. I only have enough supplies for 5 students to play at a time. While they are at this math center students are engaged and having fun while learning. Many students have requested more cash resisters so that more students can participate at once and create a store front for our money unit. This game we create is a great motivational tool for students.

We need 2 learning cash registers,play food, learning money, play wallets, and books about money to create games that support a financially literate classroom.

With these supplies I would introduce coins with the Dr. Seuss finance book and then once student had a grasp on basic recognition of coins introduce the wallets, cash registers, food, and money. More than ever financial literacy is important due to the decline in cash use. Students need hands-on practice with this real world skill.
