Help Mrs. Robinson

My Students

My first graders don't think money grows on trees, they think it comes from the ATM. How did it get there? They aren't sure. Help me teach financial literacy to my young learners. I want to set up a pretend store and restaurant so they can learn about coins, cash, and why they are important.

My school is a Title 1 School.

Almost 70% of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunches. Making learning fun is very important with these students. My students will learn more about financial literacy if they learn in a hands-on way. They can learn about jobs and earning while completing chores in our classroom. They will earn money they can spend to buy pencils and other items. They can learn while playing as they pay for and make change in a pretend store or restaurant.

My Project

My students learn best while they are engaged in a hands-on way. They can set up their own store and learn about money while having fun. I need a pretend cash register with money and items to begin a "store station" for my students. Students can learn about financial literacy while they play. Students can learn about earning and spending as they complete jobs in the classroom. Children are never to young to begin learning about how to handle money.

Financial literacy is a great life lesson even for students as young as mine.

Using money to learn about math is a great tool. They will learn about spending and saving to buy items. Students will learn about addition and subtraction in a fun hands-on way. The lessons they learn in first grade will follow them through their school career.
