My Students

My first grade classroom is filled with the college graduates of 2030. We embrace grit, integrity, curiosity, and zest. We work hard so that we can graduate high school, enroll in competitive colleges and universities, graduate college, and positively impact change in our community, Detroit.

My classroom is currently home to 27 tenacious first graders.

They call Detroit home and many of them have seen little outside of their own neighborhoods. Around 86 percent qualify for free and reduced lunch and 100 percent are black. Only 15 percent of my class came in on grade level in reading, and 19 percent in math. My school, a college preparatory school, is working diligently to provide its scholars with the quality education they deserve, one that will prepare them for college. All of my scholars are eager to tackle the rigor of first grade and they crave to know more about the world around them. Their parents are some of the hardest workers I know. Many work two jobs and/or the night shift and are still able to find time to volunteer in the classroom. We are a community dedicated to learning.

My Project

I am launching a job and behavior financial literacy initiative that will simulate having a job, and will give my scholars an interactive experience with making, exchanging, and saving money. Every scholar will be assigned a job and a “paycheck.” They will be paid daily with plastic money for doing their job correctly, and will also be paid for arriving to school on time and for turning in their homework. If caught showing our school’s core values, scholars will be paid a “bonus.” If caught doing something that could harm the community, scholars will have to pay a fee. Each week scholars will have the opportunity to exchange their coins for larger value coins and dollar bills, and purchase items from the class store. Scholars will need to save up and keep track of their money tubes in order to attend the end of school party which will have a $10 entrance fee!

By supporting this project you will be helping my scholars become responsible citizens, and more financially literate.

This initiative will make understanding money and money management fun, and it will provide my scholars with a hands-on experience with making, counting, sorting, exchanging, and saving money.
