Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can we create interest for mathematics to economically challenged students whose survival needs are a priority? By providing them the tools and the know how to apply mathematical concepts and skills to real life situations.

My students come from low income and educationally disadvantaged homes.

Their parents work long and late hours, therefore homework and project based learning assignments must be completed in school. Our school is almost 100% meal reduced program, composed of 95% Latin American and 60% recent immigrants.

My Project

I am requesting a Building Fractions, and one Decimals & Percents Magnetic Board. My students will use the fraction, decimal and percentage manipulatives to add on to their conceptual understanding of money. They will be able to bridge how percentages and fractions are a form to financial literacy as they analyze and make decisions on problem solving activities and projects. The seat sacks will organize their math supplies and materials.

Students' financial literacy will allow them to become savior consumers as well as investors.

They will be able to explain their new learning as they apply it to real life financial situations. Their seat sacks will be a personal place where students can organize their math materials as needed. These students will build background to prepare them for the 4th grade mathematics standards.
